George Barrell journal 1806 Barrell, George journal

The George Barrell journal is a bound account entitled "Journal of a Voyage from Boston to Malaga in the Brig and Return in the Schooner by George Barrell." Along with Barrell's prose descriptions of life at sea and detailed depictions of Gibraltar and Malaga, the author drew 32 colored illustrations, primarily of landscapes and people he encountered on his journey. George Guelphs Barrell was born on November 24, 1780, and lived in Massachusetts. Little is known of his professional career, but he traveled to Spain in 1806 and, in 1817, James Monroe appointed him United States consul to Malaga, Spain.
